Oasis of the Seas is the namesake of the Oasis class, which redefined cruise ship scale when introduced. Launched in 2009, this ship is 226,838 GT after a 2019 refit and spans 1,187 feet in length. It can carry around 5,600 guests (double occupancy), or up to about 6,780 passengers at full capacity. Oasis was the world’s largest cruise ship at her debut, introducing the unique “neighborhood” concept – including a Central Park with real trees and a Boardwalk – and the first AquaTheater high-diving show at sea. Onboard highlights range from a zip line traversing nine decks, twin surf simulators, an ice-skating rink, and numerous dining venues, to Broadway-quality musicals. This groundbreaking vessel set the template for entertainment and amenities on megaships.
Unique features:
Industry firsts: Oasis of the Seas was the first ship to feature an open-air Central Park and Boardwalk neighborhood, complete with a carousel, eateries, and live plants. It also debuted the AquaTheater, a deep pool amphitheater for acrobatic diving shows, and a zip line – all first-of-their-kind attractions on a cruise ship.
“Amplified” upgrades: In late 2019, Oasis underwent a $165 million Royal Amplification overhaul that added modern thrills. New additions included the Ultimate Abyss (a 10-story dry slide, the tallest at sea) and The Perfect Storm trio of water slides, plus fresh venues like the Portside BBQ restaurant and Music Hall live venue. These upgrades brought Oasis up to date with the latest amenities.
Last major drydock/update: October–November 2019 – Underwent a major amplification refit. This refurbishment added water slides (the Ultimate Abyss dry slide and Perfect Storm water slides), a redesigned Caribbean-style pool deck with the Lime & Coconut bar, new dining like Portside BBQ and El Loco Fresh, the Bionic Bar, and other attractions. Additional cabins were also added during this refit, slightly increasing the ship’s tonnage.
