Quantum of the Seas, which debuted in 2014, is the lead ship of the Quantum class. At about 168,666 GT and ~1,141 feet long, Quantum carries roughly 4,180 guests (double occupancy) and up to 4,905 passengers maximum. Quantum of the Seas introduced a host of groundbreaking features when launched: the North Star observation capsule (a jewel-like glass pod that rises over 300 feet above sea level for 360° views), the RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator, and the Two70° lounge – an aft panoramic space that transforms with floor-to-ceiling screens and robotic arms for shows. It also introduced “smart ship” technology like RFID wristbands, fastest-at-sea internet, and virtual balconies in interior staterooms (real-time ocean views on wall screens). Quantum has a mix of dining that broke from tradition (no main dining room; an early version of “Dynamic Dining”), including venues like Jamie’s Italian and Wonderland. Initially homeported in New York, Quantum now often sails in Asia. With its blend of tech and style, Quantum of the Seas set a new bar for large cruise ships in the 2010s.
Unique features:
North Star & high-tech amenities: Quantum launched with the North Star – a unique glass observation gondola on a mechanical arm that lifts guests high above the ship for unparalleled vistas. This ship also pioneered interior Virtual Balcony cabins, giving inside staterooms a floor-to-ceiling digital view of the ocean, a concept first realized on Quantum.
Two70 and SeaPlex: The ship’s aft Two70° theater is an engineering marvel – by day a lounge with 270° ocean views, by night a multimedia theater with robotic screens and aerialists. Quantum also has the expansive SeaPlex, the largest indoor active space at sea at launch, featuring a full-size basketball court that doubles as a bumper car arena and roller skating rink. These venues underscore Quantum’s fusion of entertainment and innovation.
Last major drydock/update: None yet. Since its November 2014 launch, Quantum of the Seas has not had a major refurbishment. The ship did receive some tweaks (e.g. adjustments to dining concepts) before deployment to Asia, but no significant drydock overhaul. It remains in essentially its original state aside from routine upkeep.
