Independence of the Seas, launched in 2008, is the third Freedom-class ship. Like her sister ships, she is approximately 154,407 GT and 1,112 feet long, carrying about 3,858 guests at double occupancy (around 4,560 max capacity). Known affectionately as “Indy,” this ship has been a staple in both the Caribbean and European markets. Independence originally boasted the hallmark Freedom-class features (FlowRider, ice rink, Promenade) and in 2018 underwent amplification to add even more. Her 2018 refit introduced the Sky Pad – a trampoline bungee dome on the aft deck offering VR experiences, as well as the Perfect Storm water slides. Independence also gained new venues like Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade and Izumi Hibachi, and onboard activities like laser tag. The ship’s entertainment includes an exclusive musical (Grease was added, replacing Hairspray which she had originally). With vibrant facilities for kids (e.g., Splashaway Bay) and adults (the pool deck and lounges), Independence of the Seas is a beloved all-rounder ship that combines Freedom-class amenities with some Quantum-era thrills.
Unique features:
Sky Pad trampoline dome: Independence was the first ship to debut the Sky Pad in 2018 – an orange globe on her top deck housing bungee trampolines with optional virtual reality goggles. This gravity-defying attraction is a signature of Indy after amplification and provides a unique thrill, bouncing guests high while gazing at the sea or a VR world.
Action-packed additions: The ship’s 2018 amplification also added activities like Laser Tag: Battle for Planet Z (an glow-in-the-dark laser tag experience in Studio B) and an escape room challenge. These, combined with the surf simulator and water slides, make Independence stand out as one of the most activity-loaded ships of its size.
Last major drydock/update: April 2018 – Underwent a Royal Amplified refit. Independence’s makeover brought two Perfect Storm water slides, the Sky Pad trampoline/VR experience, a laser tag arena, a new Escape Room, and venues including Playmakers Sports Bar, Izumi Hibachi, Sugar Beach candy shop, and Fish & Ships eatery. Cabins and the Promenade were also refreshed. This 2018 refurbishment was the last major update, keeping Independence modern and in line with newer ships.
