Liberty of the Seas, entering service in 2007, is the second Freedom-class ship. She shares the class measurements (around 154,407 GT, 1,112 feet long) and carries roughly 3,634 guests double occupancy, up to about 4,960 passengers at maximum load. Liberty expanded on Freedom’s features, famously adding a larger water slide in a later renovation. Like her sisters, Liberty has the Royal Promenade indoor street, ice rink, FlowRider surf simulator, and extensive dining and lounges. A notable enhancement came in a 2016 drydock when Liberty of the Seas was fitted with the “Tidal Wave” water slide – the first boomerang-style slide at sea, which arcs riders high up a curved wall. She also received the Perfect Storm duo of water slides at that time, along with updated kids’ facilities. On board, Liberty offers Broadway-style entertainment (she showcased Saturday Night Fever for many years) and all-ages activities from mini-golf to a 3D cinema. Stationed often in Texas, Liberty of the Seas is a favorite for Caribbean cruises, blending Freedom-class excitement with unique waterpark thrills.
Unique features:
Tidal Wave slide: Liberty is distinguished by its Tidal Wave water slide, added in 2016 – a steep raft slide that sends riders up a near-vertical wall for a moment of weightlessness. This was an industry first and remains exclusive to Liberty, giving it a standout attraction among Royal Caribbean ships.
Family additions: Liberty features a larger kids’ splash park (revamped as Splashaway Bay after 2016) and was among the first ships to offer Puzzle Break: Escape Room experience. The ship also has a prominent H2O Zone (with water cannons and sculptures) that was upgraded, underscoring Liberty’s focus on family fun. These enhancements complement her FlowRider and sports court, making Liberty a very activity-rich ship.
Last major drydock/update: January 2016 – Received a significant refurbishment. In this update, Liberty had the Tidal Wave boomerang slide and two additional water slides installed. The ship also saw new splash park features for kids, an updated Giovanni’s Table restaurant, and improvements to lounges. (Liberty’s more extensive Royal Amplification was postponed from 2021; a future refit is planned for 2026 to further refresh venues.) The 2016 drydock remains her last major update.
