Jewel of the Seas, launched in 2004, is the fourth and final Radiance-class ship. She is 90,090 GT and 962 feet long, carrying about 2,110 guests double occupancy (up to 2,702 at full capacity). Like her sisters, Jewel is distinguished by extensive glasswork and a sleek profile. She has all the Radiance-class signatures: a Solarium with a retractable roof, a rock climbing wall, and beautiful lounges with ocean views. Jewel’s decor is artful, featuring a stunning central staircase and a light-filled atrium. In spring 2016, Jewel of the Seas underwent a refurbishment (as part of an “innovation renovation”) that added an outdoor movie screen, revamped the kids’ area, and added specialty dining like Izumi and Giovanni’s Table. Jewel often splits her time between Europe (Mediterranean or Northern Europe cruises) and the Caribbean. Passengers appreciate Jewel for her refined and peaceful atmosphere – it’s easy to find a quiet nook to read by a window or enjoy a cocktail watching the sunset. Yet, she still offers plenty to do, from mini-golf and pool parties to the Casino Royale and Broadway-style shows in the Coral Theater.
Unique features:
Elegant design: Jewel of the Seas is often considered one of the prettiest ships in Royal Caribbean’s fleet due to her sleek hull and interior design. Her Tides Dining Room features a sweeping staircase and enormous ocean-facing windows, and the ship’s solarium is themed with towering sculptures and tropical plants, giving Jewel a distinctively elegant vibe compared to larger, flashier ships.
Interactive art: Jewel’s art collection includes interactive pieces, such as a series of kaleidoscope sculptures that guests can spin to create patterns. The ship also has a gorgeous atrium sculpture “Roots” spanning several decks, and colorful murals in stairwells. These artistic touches provide Jewel with a unique identity and a cultured atmosphere as guests explore the ship.
Last major drydock/update: April 2016 – Underwent a refurbishment in spring 2016 (at around her 12-year mark). This update added a poolside movie screen, replaced the teen and kids clubs with updated Adventure Ocean spaces, and introduced specialty restaurants (Giovanni’s, Izumi, and a modernized Chops Grille). The staterooms received new carpets and interactive TVs. Technological updates (improved Wi-Fi, digital signage) were also done. This 2016 refit is Jewel’s most recent major upgrade; she has not had another significant drydock since, other than standard maintenance.
