Enchantment of the Seas, launched in 1997, is a Vision-class ship that underwent a remarkable transformation. In 2005, Enchantment was literally cut in half and lengthened: a 22-meter (73 ft) midsection was added, increasing her length to 989 feet and tonnage to 82,910 GT. She now carries about 2,252 guests double occupancy (up to 2,730 total). This stretching added space for more cabins and new features, including extra lounges and a expanded pool deck with suspension bridges over the water. Enchantment is beloved for her casual, fun atmosphere. She has a rock climbing wall, bungee trampoline jump experience (installed after stretch, later removed), and the typical Vision-class Centrum, pools, and Viking Crown Lounge. While one of the older ships, Enchantment received updates over time: a 2012 refresh added the Oasis-class hit Park Café and an outdoor movie screen, and upgraded amenities. Often based in Baltimore or Port Canaveral historically, Enchantment sails shorter Bahamas and Caribbean cruises. Her claim to fame is certainly the mid-life stretch, which literally “enchanted” her with extra life and made her one of the biggest transformations in cruising.
Unique features:
Mid-ship stretch: Enchantment is one of the few cruise ships in the world that was lengthened mid-career. In 2005, she was cut and a massive new section was inserted, adding 151 new staterooms and features. This unique engineering feat sets Enchantment apart – her deck layout has distinctive “bulges” where the new block was added, and suspension walkways on deck were added as a novelty during the stretch.
Interactive fountain splash pad: Enchantment gained a “Splash Deck” with interactive fountain jets during her stretch, a precursor to modern splash pads. Kids (and adults) can play in the squirting fountains by day. This area, along with the suspension bridge flanking it, gives Enchantment’s midship pool deck a unique resort-like feel not found on her sister ships.
Last major drydock/update: December 2012 – Received a refurbishment as part of the fleet revitalization program. Enhancements during that update included adding the Park Café in the Solarium for light bites, a poolside movie screen, and technology upgrades (Wi-Fi improvements, digital signage). Cabins were refreshed and some public spaces (like the Champagne Bar converting to R Bar) were modernized. (Her most major update remains the July 2005 stretch operation, which dramatically altered the ship.) Post-2012, Enchantment has only seen upkeep drydocks; no significant new amenities have been added since.
