Grandeur of the Seas, launched in 1996, is the oldest Royal Caribbean ship still in active service as of 2025. She is a Vision-class ship, 73,817 GT in size and about 916 feet long, with capacity for around 1,950 guests double occupancy (up to 2,440 maximum). Despite her age, Grandeur (affectionately nicknamed “Grand Dame” or even “Lady G”) has been kept in good shape through refurbishments. A significant revitalization in 2012 added the lines’ newer venues (Park Café, specialty restaurants) and modern tech. Later that year, Grandeur experienced a fire in 2013, after which she was repaired and refreshed again. Grandeur’s appeal lies in her classic cruise feel: a smaller ship with an easy layout, plentiful deck space for lounging, and personalized service. She has an elegant atrium with a grand staircase, a pool deck with a Solarium enclosed by a glass roof, and lounges that evoke traditional charm. Grandeur of the Seas has been based in Baltimore for many years, serving the US East Coast market with cruises to Bermuda, the Caribbean, and Canada/New England. Passengers often praise her intimate size and the friendly, tight-knit crew atmosphere that develops on longer sailings.
Unique features:
Cozy, classic cruising: Being the oldest ship in the fleet, Grandeur offers a throwback cruise experience not easily found elsewhere in Royal Caribbean. She has no surf simulators or water slides – instead, guests enjoy simple pleasures like shuffleboard on deck, a walk-around promenade, and panoramic views from the Viking Crown Lounge. This ship’s smaller size enables calling at smaller ports and provides a communal feel on board.
Survivor and beloved veteran: Grandeur has a unique story – she survived a significant onboard fire in May 2013. The ship was expertly repaired and returned to service within months, earning admiration and a loyal following of guests who affectionately consider her indestructible. Royal Caribbean even decided to retain Grandeur in the fleet (after initially planning a transfer), due to popular demand. This longevity and resilience make “Lady G” special among Royal Caribbean fans.
Last major drydock/update: Spring 2012 – Grandeur underwent a comprehensive revitalization in 2012 (in line with sister ships) as part of Royal’s fleet-wide upgrade program. New features added included specialty dining venues (Giovanni’s Table, Izumi, Park Café), the retro R Bar in the Centrum, an outdoor movie screen, and refreshed staterooms. In May 2013, after a fire incident, Grandeur was refurbished again during repairs, effectively renewing soft furnishings and some spaces. No further major updates have been made since 2013. She is slated for a life-extension maintenance drydock in 2024, but as of 2025, the 2012–13 refurbishments are the most recent significant enhancements to Grandeur of the Seas.
